Album
Genius Soul Jazz is a 1961 album by Ray Charles featuring big band arrangements by Quincy Jones and Ralph Burns. Charles is accompanied by two groups drawn from members of The Count Basie Band and from the ranks of top New York session players. It was recorded at the Rudy Van Gelder Studio in two sessions on December 26 and 27, 1960 and originally released on the Impulse label as Impulse A2. Genius Soul Jazz - Ray Charles. I decided I needed Genius Soul Jazz 1961 as it was the second album released on Impulse and thought it sounded like and interesting album with the half Quincey Jone arrangements and half Ralph Burns arrangements. This package, however, also contains My Kind of Jazz 1970 and Jazz Number II 1972 both originally released on the another ABC label Tangerine. This is really SoulR&B with some mild jazz flavouring but that is the beauty of Ray Charles, he wasn't too interested in conforming to genre. The attempts to fit him into various genres was really a marketing ploy, not his idea at all, but it more often paid off that not and here is does and how. Read more.
