The Marriage of Figaro, K. 492, is an opera buffa comic opera in four acts composed in 1786 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, with an Italian libretto written by Lorenzo Da Ponte. It premiered at the Burgtheater in Vienna on 1 May 1786. The opera's libretto is based on a stage comedy by Pierre Beaumarchais, La folle journée, ou le Mariage de Figaro The Mad Day, or The Marriage of Figaro, which was first performed in 1784. It tells how the servants Figaro and Susanna succeed in getting married, foiling. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composes The Marriage of Figaro however, it is far more successful in Prague than in Vienna. Finally he has a chance to work with his favourite librettist da Ponte again. Mozart and da Ponte had reached their goal: The Marriage of Figaro was performed and even rewarded by a fee from the emperor. The world premiere on May 1, 1786, at the Burgtheater in Vienna was not exceptionally successful. The orchestra had difficulties coming to terms with Mozarts complicated music. The Viennese audience, more attuned to the works of the popular Salieri, were not overly thrilled. Le nozze di Figaro 1786.
