Galaxie 500s Today is the bands debut LP, released in 1988 just after the King of SpainTugboat and a promo flexidisc featuring Oblivious. It came out on the small indie label Aurora and, although it didnt reach anywhere near mainstream success, it did open the doors of UK label Rough Trade to the band, through which they would later release their two other albums. Galaxie 500's debut doesn't merely live up to the sweet promise of the band's debut single Tugboat, Today's final song, but almost without trying becomes its own gently powerful touchstone. While the influences are clear - third album Velvet Underground, early non-dance New Order, psychedelic haze and fuzz thanks to the reverb Kramer piled on as producer - the resulting brew easily stands on its own. Galaxie 500 didn't last long. They formed in Boston in 1986, released three albums between 1988 and 1990, got great notices in the press especially the UK, and then dissolved. Following their breakup, after which lead singer and guitarist Dean Wareham went on to Luna and the rhythm section of Damon Krukowski and Naomi Yang formed Magic Hour and Damon and Naomi, Galaxie 500 albums went out of print. Krukowski bought the master tapes in an auction, the albums were gathered with bonus material in a box set by Rykodisc in 1996 and then reissued separately. Enter Galaxie 500, one of my favourite bands from the 1980s. Where other bands were singing about sex, money and cocaine, Galaxie 500, composed of guitarist Dean Wareham, bassist Naomi Yang and drummer Damon Krukowski, took a more introspective root, writing about urban alienation, angst and love. It may sound like the typical sort of stuff aimed at outcast high school students, and as one I loved it to death, but Galaxie 500 really do offer more, especially on their excellent debut Today. For one, I think the production is terrific. The album opens with Flowers, a beautiful love song that seems almost the antithesis of 80s excess
